A Guide to Erosion Control Techniques

When it comes to restoring and protecting our land, erosion control plays a crucial role. Whether it's preventing soil movement, minimizing water pollution, or promoting healthy vegetation growth, effective erosion control strategies are essential. There are a variety of innovative products available to meet the diverse needs of land restoration projects.

Quick-Growing Grasses

Grasses are recognized for their effectiveness in soil erosion control, offering stability, water and nutrient retention, and improving soil quality. Rapidly growing species are particularly valuable in preventing erosion by swiftly establishing themselves and developing strong root systems that bind soil particles and stabilize slopes. Some popular choices grasses used for erosion control include: Timothy, Tall Fescue or Perennial Ryegrass.

Mulches

Mulches are among the oldest and most trusted methods for erosion control. They serve multiple purposes, from shielding the soil against erosive forces to enhancing seed germination and seedling establishment. Two main types are commonly used:

Loose Mulches: Typically composed of straw or hay fibers, these are spread over the soil's surface to create a protective barrier.

Hydraulic Mulches: Made from materials like wood, cellulose, or paper fibers, these are applied with water using specialized equipment. This method ensures thorough coverage and adherence to the soil.

Rolled Erosion-Control Products (RECPs)

For more specific needs, RECPs come into play, offering structured solutions to combat erosion:

Mulch-Control Netting (MCN): Used to secure loose fiber mulches (such as hay or straw), MCN consists of woven fibers that effectively anchor the mulch to the soil.

Open-Weave Textile Netting (OWT): Designed from closely woven polyolefin yarns, OWT meshes provide robust protection, especially on steeper slopes, safeguarding both seeds and soil.

Erosion-Control Blankets (ECB): These blankets are crafted from natural polymer fibers, promoting erosion control while facilitating seed germination and vegetation growth. Available in various materials like straw, wood excelsior, coconut, and polypropylene, ECBs come in versatile configurations to suit different project needs.

Turf Reinforcement Mats (TRM): For permanent erosion control in critical hydraulic environments, TRMs are indispensable. Constructed from durable synthetic fibers, these mats offer long-term stability and protection.

Tackifiers

To further fortify erosion control measures, tackifiers are applied. These adhesive liquids bind soil particles and mulch fibers together, preventing displacement by wind or water erosion. Available in organic or non-organic compositions, tackifiers also aid in dust control, contributing to cleaner and safer work environments.
